So I just finished up watching the two Ted Talks and looking over some Canva tutorials. I have to say that I found both the videos and the tutorials very beneficial. I have no previous experience in design so I was happy to learn a bit about what design entails. The two Ted Talks were similar in regards to the approach both Carson and Scher think people should take when designing. They both agree that design can be taken up by an amateurs and great designs can result. Scher discusses two concepts, serious and solemn designs. Serious designs are created when a designer creates something unoriginal by having fun with their work. Solemn design is the opposite and happens when a designer is designing what is supposed to be designed, what is aesthetically appealing to a majority of people during that time period. Carson, an amateur himself, discusses some of his work and I would argue that his work can be considered serious. He has fun with his work and gets a kick out of it, but that doesn’t make his designs bad but rather great. In my opinion, I would say that the Canva tutorials are geared more towards solemn design. The tips in the tutorials were very cookie cutter tips. They were by the book it seemed…nothing really out of the box. So, with all that said I found the Ted Talks resonated with me the most and I plan to design in a fun way and embrace being an amateur. Hopefully by doing so I will create some pretty cool stuff! However, I will definitely still be using some of the tips I picked up while doing some of the tutorials on Canva!
